Flatten a PDF: lock forms and annotations
Filled a form? Flattening merges the field values, comments and stamps into the page itself, so they print reliably and can no longer be changed.
- Files never leave your device
- Text is truly deleted, not hidden
- Free, no account, no watermark

What does flattening a PDF mean?
An interactive PDF has layers on top of the page: form fields you can type into, checkboxes, comments, stamps, drawings. They are displayed by the reader, but they are separate objects that can be edited, moved or deleted.
Flattening draws those elements into the page content and removes the interactive objects. The document looks the same, but it now behaves like a printed sheet.
When should you flatten?
- Before sending a completed form, so the recipient cannot alter your answers and every viewer displays them the same way.
- Before printing, because some printers and older readers skip form fields.
- Before archiving contracts or reports.
- Before redacting: text typed in a form field is not part of the page. Our redaction tool merges fields automatically, but many other tools do not.
- Before uploading to a portal that rejects interactive forms or shows them empty.
Why do my form answers disappear when I send a PDF?
Because they were never part of the page. Form values live in separate field objects, and each reader decides how to draw them. Some mobile apps, email previews, printers and older readers skip them entirely, or show them only when you click a field. Flattening solves this by writing the values into the page content, where every viewer has to display them.
Flatten vs. "Print to PDF"
A common trick is to print the document to a PDF printer. It often works, but it rebuilds the whole file: links, bookmarks and accessibility tags can be lost, and some drivers turn pages into images or change the page size. Flattening only touches the interactive parts and keeps everything else as it was.
What gets flattened
| Element | After flattening |
|---|---|
| Text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, drop-downs | Their current value is drawn on the page |
| Comments, highlights, stamps, drawings | Drawn on the page as they appear |
| Signature drawn or stamped | Kept as part of the page |
| Links and bookmarks | Kept |
| Text | Stays real, selectable text |
Questions people ask
Can I unflatten a PDF?
No. Once flattened, the field values are ordinary page content. Keep your original file if you may need to edit the form again.
Will my signature stay?
A signature drawn or stamped as an annotation is kept and becomes part of the page. A certified digital signature, however, is invalidated by any change to the file, flattening included.
Does flattening reduce quality?
No. Text stays as sharp, selectable text; nothing is turned into an image.
Does flattening make the file smaller?
Usually a little, because the field objects are removed, but the difference is small. Flattening is about locking the content, not compressing it.
Can I flatten only the form and keep the comments?
Yes. Untick “Comments, stamps and drawings” before flattening: only the form fields are merged into the page.
Does it flatten layers?
No. Optional content layers (OCG), used in some technical drawings and maps, are kept as they are. This tool flattens form fields and annotations.
