How to remove metadata from a PDF

  1. Open the PDF

Drop it on the page. It is analysed on your computer.

  2. Read the report

Every field that is filled is shown in red: author, title, software, dates, XMP block, comments, attachments, scripts.

  3. Clean and download

Click the button. We save a new file without them, re-check it, and show you what is left.

What is PDF metadata?

Besides the pages you see, a PDF stores information about itself. The document properties hold a title, an author, a subject, keywords, the application that created the file (for example "Microsoft Word") and the one that turned it into a PDF, plus creation and modification dates. Many files also contain an XMP block, a second copy of the same details in XML that some tools forget to clean.

Other things travel with the file without being "metadata" in the strict sense: comments and sticky notes, highlights, attached files, and sometimes JavaScript.

Why remove it?

  • The author field often contains the full name of the person who wrote the original Word file, or the name of the company's licence.
  • Dates reveal when a document was really drafted, which can matter in a negotiation or a dispute.
  • Comments left during review ("check this figure with the client") are easy to forget and easy to read.
  • Attached files can contain a whole other document.

Edit PDF metadata instead of removing it

Sometimes you want clean, correct properties rather than none: a proper title that shows in browser tabs and search results, your company as author, meaningful keywords. Open Edit the properties instead under the report, change the title, author, subject, keywords, creator or producer, and download. Empty fields are removed. The old XMP block is dropped at the same time, because some readers would otherwise keep showing the previous values.

What this tool does not change

It does not touch the visible content of your pages. If a name is printed on the page, use Redact PDF to delete it. Combine both for a document that is safe to publish.

Questions people ask

Which metadata is removed?

The document information dictionary (title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, dates), the XMP metadata stream, private application data, and, if ticked, comments, attachments and JavaScript. The file also gets a new internal ID.

Can I change the title or author instead of deleting them?

Yes. Open “Edit the properties instead” below the report, type the new values and download. Leave a field empty to remove it.

How do I check the result?

After cleaning, the tool reopens the new file and shows its report again. You can also check in your PDF reader under File, then Properties.

Is the visible content changed?

No. Text, images and layout stay exactly the same.

Why does my PDF reader still show a producer?

Some readers display a default value when the field is empty, or the file you opened is the original. Open the downloaded copy, whose name ends in “-clean”.
